‘Sit, Ubu, Sit’: Who exactly was Ubu?

Growing up in the 1980s and 90s right after TV shows one of the more popular signoff tags was Sit, Ubu, sit … good dog accompanied by a photo of Ubu taken near the Louvre in Paris with the Frisbee hanging from his mouth and I always wondered who Ubu was.

Apparently, Ubu was Gary David Goldberg’s labrador retriever Ubu Roi, who sadly passed away in 1984. Goldberg really loved that dog and not only did he use it as his signoff card he also named his production company after it.

In an interview before his death Goldberg actually commented on the image and catchphrase stating:

“I just thought, you know, I want very little distance between who I was that day, and who I am now,” Goldberg said in a 2007 interview with the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. “I just don’t want a lot of distance there. So it was really nice to have that logo to always remind you who you are.”

Now that that mystery is solved I can move on with the rest of my day.
