Anxiety always makes Father’s Day awkward for me

Happy Father’s Day to all the dads out there! I hope you have an excellent day and you are free from any family drama.

Many of you have great relationships with your dad and easily are able to celebrate Father’s Day with them. Unfortunately, I don’t have the greatest relationship with my dad even though I would like to. I’ve always been a bit awkward and even afraid around my dad so my anxiety tends to shut me down to the point I don’t really speak unless I’m spoken to.┬áNot an ideal situation for you to be in when you’re around a member of your family.

Don’t get me wrong, I do love my dad we both just have difficulties expressing it due to the way we were raised. My generation at least in my family’s line was the last one where children had to respect their elders and were discouraged from participating in conversations with adults. In my mind, I guess I’m still that child and that’s probably what’s keeping me from an actual father-son relationship with my dad.

My dad born in 1944 so he is getting up there in age. I do hope to be more comfortable around him before he passes but right now my anxiety just won’t let me. I’ll probably just give him a call even though he lives only 5 miles or so away.

I hope none of you have my issues but if you do know that someone else out there is having a very awkward Father’s Day as well.
