I’ve had a hard time and apologize for being absent across social media. I felt as though I needed to take a break and work on my mental health. I’m starting to feel better but still, have a long way to go. Today I wanted to share a few things that have helped.
Himalayan Salt Lamps
I purchased a few Himalayan salt lamps off of Amazon out of pure desperation To be specific: WBM 1002 Himalayan Glow Hand Carved Natural Salt Lamp with Genuine Neem Wood Base/Bulb and Updated Dimmer Control, Crystal, Amber, 8 to 11 lb for my desk and a Crystal Decor Natural Himalayan Salt Lamp in Star Design Metal Basket with Dimmable Cord for my bedroom. I know there no real scientific evidence proving they do anything. For me though, looking at the orange glow is calming. At times it helps me remember to practice mindfulness instead of becoming overwhelmed. When they’re on the room seems more peaceful and even my wife has noticed a difference.
Cleaning My Desk Space
I’ve tried to organize my desk and keep it as clear as possible since I do you work from home and spend a lot of time at it. I downgraded my computer monitor to a 32-inch screen Element HDTV from Wal-Mart. I had used our 13-year-old 48-inch plasma TV. I have a small sign that I put motivational quotes on and do the same with my computer wallpaper. I also took off anything which wasn’t necessary to complete my daily tasks.
I started keeping the lights on inside the house during the daytime. We got me a bright desk lamp from IKEA for when I’m working. Also, I have kept the door open in my living room for extra light and even some fresh air.
I get pretty paranoid when my dogs start to bark at something outside. I hate interacting with people and don’t always feel like answering my door. I bought a cheap security camera off of Amazon (Funlux 720p HD Wireless Smart Home Day Night Security Surveillance Camera) and pointed it at my front gate. Now when there is movement by my gate or my dogs start to bark I can pull up a screen and see what it is. This eliminates a lot of my stress. Now I can decide in advance if I want to go outside and deal with whatever’s going on.
Air Fresheners and Incense
As I’ve mentioned before smells can be a bad trigger for me. We purchased some cans of air fresheners, scented candles, and an incense holder for my desk. I use these a lot when I am stressed. My favorite smells so far our lemon, white sage, lavender, and frankincense. Not only do they help when I’m feeling anxious they also help with the occasional pet odors.
I started using my Recollections planner from Michael’s again to set out my week. I’m the type of guy that gets upset when things mess up my schedule. Using a planner helps give me something to look forward to as well as make sure that I get my needed tasks done each day. I only wish I could get my kids to tell me about school events in advance so that I can mark them down as well.
I’m still having trouble sleeping but keeping track of my thoughts and fears have seemed to help a little. One day I will have to share some of those with you.
I get stressed out a lot when I have to drive and because my wife still doesn’t have her driver’s license I drive a lot. Since I do have a Google Music account I’ve made a few relaxing playlists for myself. When I drive I have one that consists of ballads that I play to keep myself calm when traffic gets too bad.
I’ve mentioned before that I’ve lost a lot of weight because of this a lot of my clothing has been too big. Recently, I purchased a lot of pajama pants from Wal-Mart to help with this issue. I’m able to be comfortable while working at home and yes if I am forced to go out I do wear them outside too. The ones I’m wearing today are kind of interesting since they do look like real jeans. My wife is fine with it and at this point I don’t care what people think about my looks.
These are the things that have helped me so far feel a little better. I’m still searching for more ways to get out of my depressive state so that I can do more things. Right now I’m focusing on trying to relax, get healthier and do my job so that I can provide for my family. Eventually, I do plan on blogging more, posting more on social media, making YouTube videos and even working on my side hustle. It’s just going to take time.
