The truth about vitamin D
Vitamin D happens to be the only essential vitamin humans cannot obtain via dietary consumption and a vitamin D deficiency can wreak havoc on your life. D vitamins enter our bodies through our exposure to the sun. The media plays up the fact that you shouldn’t spend time in the sun because of the risk of sun cancer but, daily exposure to sunlight is essential to living a healthy life. While too much sun is dangerous you only really need 10 to 20 minutes of sunlight a day.
The body needs vitamin D to control how much calcium humans absorb into their bodies from food. Calcium allows us to build strong bones and teeth and send messages across our nervous system so that we don’t end up being like Mr. Glass. D vitamins also can improve our immune system and has been scientifically proven to reduce the risk of being diagnosed with certain types of cancer, especially colon cancer.
In addition to all that vitamin D is also a necessity if one wishes to keep a positive mental health status. Over the years there has been a multitude of studies that have hinted that people diagnosed with severe depression and other mood disorders all seem to have a lack of vitamin D as a commonality.
What about supplements?
While there are many supplements out there that claim to give your body the required daily dose of vitamin D you should know that most of them are a waste of money. Your lack of naturally generated vitamin D, unfortunately, leads to the inability to absorb the man-made alternative to natural vitamin D.
The moral of all this is if you wish to feel better both mentally and physically spending some time outdoors is a must. Start small and don’t forget to wear some sun protection if you’re not used to being outdoors. Best of luck and I hope you feel better.
