On Friday the WWE will be holding it’s Greatest Royal Rumble live event in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. This will be the WWE Network’s first main card event of the year and Vince McMahon is pulling out all the stops. On top of having their 50-man Royal Rumble, and there will be seven WWE championship on the line. It’s almost as if the WWE has decided to give fans a second Wrestlemania this year.
WWE Greatest Royal Rumble match breakdown:
- WWE Universal Title Steel Cage Match
This match pits social medias least favorite wrestlers against each other. Brock Lesnar vs. Roman Reigns is the type of match that would have been big in the 1980s. It features two behemoths who can beat up anyone on the WWE roster. This match is going to be a snoozer. Current champion Brock Lesnar seems to be only into wrestling for the money and it shows. Fans are also wondering how long it will be before the WWE realizes that they don’t like Roman Reigns. This will be a very physical match and I can see the WWE going back to their original Wrestlemania plans. If so, Brock will drop the belt to Reigns so he can have some time off the television.
- WWE Title Match
WWE champion AJ Styles vs. Shinsuke Nakamura has the potential of being the match of the night. That is if you exclude the 50-man Greatest Royal Rumble match itself. While AJ did win their match at Wrestlemania via the Styles Clash there is bad blood between these two. After that match, Nakamura hit Styles with a low blow and attacked him. It was a surprising heel turn by Nakamura and the fans loved it. AJ Styles should be able to hold on to the title and this time when there is a low blow attempt AJ should be wearing a cup.
- WWE Intercontinental Title Ladder Match
On paper a fatal four-way match between Seth Rollins vs. Finn Balor vs. The Miz vs. Samoa Joe seems like a good idea. This match though seems a little too predictable. There is no chance the WWE will miss out onJinder Mahal with help from Sunil winning the U.S. title in the Middle East. As a result, Rollins will lose his belt. This will allow the brands to balance out the championships after the roster shakeup. The Miz is in the middle of a push so he is an obvious choice to win this match.
- WWE United States Title Match
Jeff Hardy is currently in the doghouse backstage so he’s not keeping his title. Since Jinder Mahal is a fan favorite in the Middle East he will get the title for the huge pop of the night. It won’t be a clean win and look for Sunil to get involved in the match.
- WWE Raw Tag Team Title Match
Sheamus & Cesaro vs. Bray Wyatt & Matt Hardy will be a fun match to watch. I can’t see Matt Hardy wasting away again as a tag team champion after the success of his Ultimate Deletion. Look for Cesaro and Sheamus will get the win and Bray and Matt fighting after the match.
- WWE Smackdown Tag Team Title Match
The Smackdown Tag Team match between The Bludgeon Brothers vs. The Usos is a hard match to predict. Both teams are what I equate to wrestling junk food. Neither is particularly good or even popular with the fans. The Usos are stale and need to repackaged soon so by default that gives The Bludgeon Brothers the win.
- WWE Cruiserweight Title Match
There will be a lot of highflying and risky moves when Cedric Alexander and Kalisto fight. I liked Cedric Alexander during his time at Ring Of Honor and am somewhat of a mark. Since Alexander won the belt at WrestleMania 34 after defeating Mustafa Ali he’ going to win. This will be a pretty fun match to watch though so grab some popcorn.
- Casket Match
The Undertaker is one of the best know WWE wrestlers of all time. He is at the end of his career but casket matches are his thing. Rusev will be seeing the casket close on him and R.I.P.
- John Cena vs. Triple H
After his squash match at Mania with the Undertaker, I suspect Triple H will lose cleanly to Cena as a reward. Unless Cena is leaving the company or starting to put over other wrestlers they need to rebuild him soon. Even past his prime HHH is still capable of giving anyone who beats him a special rub.
- 50-Man Royal Rumble a.k.a. The Greatest Royal Rumble
This is the event everyone is looking forward to since it is even in the title of the event. My favorite part of a Royal Rumble match is the surprise entrance. While I know they will throw in some little-used backstage guys there should be some guys we haven’t seen in a while.
The wrestlers we know are taking part are:
Daniel Bryan, Braun Strowman, Kurt Angle, Shane McMahon, Chris Jericho, Mark Henry, Rey Mysterio, Elias, Kevin Owens, The Great Khali, Bobby Roode, Baron Corbin, Big E, Kofi Kingston, Xavier Woods, Apollo Crews, Shelton Benjamin, Sin Cara, Chad Gable, Goldust, Titus O’Neil, Mojo Rawley, and Dolph Ziggler.
I expect there to be a few nostalgia participants like The Iron Sheik and a few guys moving up from NXT. If I had to bet on who will win the Greatest Royal Rumble I would pick Daniel Bryan since fans are still excited about his return.
WWE Women’s Revolution Dead?
Despite the recent push towards promoting women’s wrestling none are on the Greatest Royal Rumble card. I find it pretty disappointing but understand it was made from a business standpoint. In Saudi Arabia, it’s considered inappropriate for women to dress and act the way the WWE ladies do. It’s an old way of thinking but because of the amount of money involved the WWE doesn’t want to risk offending anyone and having the event canceled. The future will tell if they are serious about the women’s revolution in wrestling or if it is a marketing ploy.
There has been a lot of money spent on this reportedly six-hour event so it will be fun to watch. They struggle to get viewers to watch a full episode of Raw so it will be interesting to see how many people tune in. The kickoff show starts at 11 AM EST and the event itself begins at 12 PM EST on the WWE Network.
